3D Photogrammetry Workshop

3D Photogrammetry Workshop

3D Model of the KATIE ECCLES

My goal in developing this workshop is to support the efforts of Ken Merryman in documenting every Shipwreck in the Great Lakes!

The content is a combination of the training that I have received from Ken Merryman who is recognized as one of the leaders in the emerging field of 3D shipwreck photogrammetry, along with my personal experiences shooting models over the past two years.
Note, I am not an instructor, and this is not an official training course with any agency.

3D Photogrammetry is making triangulation obsolete. In just one dive a skilled photographer using a scooter can cover an entire site and create a model that can be viewed from any angle. Plus, researchers can take measurements down to the centimeter for further study.

Workshop Outline

  • Part One: Session Covering the ABC’s of Photogrammetry
    • 1.5 to 2 hours in length
  • Part Two: Hands On Pool Session Capturing Data
    • 1.5 hours in length
  • Part Three: Online Session on how to Process the Model
    • 1.5 to 2 hours in length

Part One: ABC’s of Photogrammetry

Session can either be In-Person or On-Line via Zoom. Includes a 39 Page Handout.

  • What is Photogrammetry
  • Use in Marine Archaeology
  • Equipment
  • Software
  • Capturing Data
  • Processing Model
  • Publishing

Part Two: Pool Session

In order to build the skills required, I have designed the “Black Pearl” Shipwreck which can be deployed in a pool. It is about five meters long by two meters wide and provides the elements needed to pratice filming 3D photogrammetry.

Pool Training Stations

  • Film ships wheel swimming with a GoPro setup with dual lights
  • Practice scooter run without any camera to learn DVP operation
  • Film bow and decking with scooter rigged with a GoPro and quad lighting

At the hands on pool session, I provide all equipment to film models, including scooters. Participants must provide their own scuba gear. Note, The session is limited to 12 divers.

Part Three: Processing the Model

Session can either be In-Person or On-Line via Zoom. Includes a 44 Page Handout.
