2023 Expedition to Document Historic Shipwrecks
Volunteering again with Ken Merryman, I filmed and created 3D Photogrammetry Models of historic shipwrecks in Georgian Bay. Working together we would take thousands of overlapping high resolution photos of each shipwreck. After diving we would process the images to create the models which have been shared with the public via 3dshipwrecks.org
Over the last two years we have been evolving the process which now includes how to calibrate camera lens using a special checkered grid.
Ken has mentored me on my journey into the world of 3D Photogrammetry and I would like to thank him for all of his support!
The schooner CYRENIAN, Canadian No. 77623, was built by Mr. Henry Rooney and launched as the PRUSSIA on April 30, 1879 at Garden Island, Ontario. She was 385 tons with a 139’ keel, 20’ 2” beam and a 14’ hold. Based out of Sarnia, she was owned by Edward Kelly of Wallaceburg. Three years later carrying a load of coal she grounded on Snake Island Reef, but successfully pulled off to continue her career. She met her final fate in the harbour at Lion’s Head, Ontario during the Great White Hurricane of 1913. From November 7th to November 10th the blizzard with hurricane force winds destroyed 19 ships and grounded at least 19 others killing more than 250 people. Today she rests just off the public beach in just one to twelve feet of water and is a popular shore dive in the area. The model was created from 668 30-megapixel and 4k GoPro frame grabs shot by Kayla Martin and Ken Merryman with support from Durrell Martin and Cris Kohl in Lions Harbor in the 2023 season.
